Being part of this incredible program has been one of the most meaningful things I’ve ever done, and I hope my story might inspire others to get involved too.
Why I Joined BBBS
I initially joined Big Brothers Big Sisters with two main goals in mind:
- I wanted to make a real difference in a child’s life.
- I had spare time and was looking for something purposeful to fill it.
What I found was far more than just a way to give back—I found a life-changing connection.
Our Favorite Activities
Over the course of our match, my Little and I have enjoyed all sorts of fun and enriching experiences together, including:
- Thrift store treasure hunting
- Getting creative with crafts
- Painting ceramics
- Baking and trying out new recipes
- Attending ballet and Irish dance performances at Wagner Noël
- Taking walks, sometimes with my dogs
- Driving around to see Christmas lights with hot chocolate in hand
- Even simple moments like chatting while running errands
The BBBS office is fantastic at providing free tickets and event opportunities throughout the year—everything from theatre performances to RockHounds baseball games, as well as regular craft and family-friendly events in both Midland and Odessa.
From My Little – Hava’s Words
“Having Dawna-Lee as my Big has been the best thing ever! Getting out and doing fun things has taught me so much. She has great advice. Now I can’t imagine my life without her!”
Hearing words like that from Hava reminds me why I joined in the first place.
What I’ve Gained as a Big
The bond between us has grown stronger with every visit. What surprised me most is how natural and fun it has been. I typically dedicate just one day a week—it can be as short as grabbing a drink or as long as spending a full day together.
Every time we meet, I’m reminded of the intelligence, curiosity, and compassion this young lady holds. She gives me hope for the future, and I feel incredibly privileged to be a part of her present—and hopefully, her future.
Being a Big isn’t about grand gestures or perfectly planned days. It’s about showing up, being present, and building a connection that makes a lasting impact on both lives. If you’ve ever considered becoming a mentor, I can’t recommend Big Brothers Big Sisters enough. You might just change someone’s life—and your own.
